No Surprises Act

Connecticut Ear, Nose and Throat Associates, P.C. Notice of Your Rights and Protections Against Surprise Medical Bills

Effective January 1, 2022, under the federal No Surprises Act, you are protected from unexpected medical bills when you receive care from an out-of-network provider or facility in certain situations.

Your Rights Under the No Surprises Act

You are protected from surprise (or “balance”) billing:
  • When you receive emergency services, even if you get them from an out-of-network provider or facility. You cannot be charged more than your in-network cost-sharing amount.
  • When you receive non-emergency care at an in-network facility by an out-of-network provider without your prior consent.
  • When you receive care from an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility for ancillary services (such as anesthesia, pathology, radiology, etc.).
You will never be asked to pay more than your plan’s in-network cost-sharing amount for these covered services.
  • When you receive emergency services, even if you get them from an out-of-network provider or facility. You cannot be charged more than your in-network cost-sharing amount.
  • When you receive non-emergency care at an in-network facility by an out-of-network provider without your prior consent.
  • When you receive care from an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility for ancillary services (such as anesthesia, pathology, radiology, etc.).

Good Faith Estimates for Uninsured and Self-Pay Patients

If you do not have insurance or choose not to use your insurance, you are entitled to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining the expected cost of your medical care.
  • You have the right to request a written estimate before scheduling your service or at any time during your care.
  • If you receive a bill that is $400 or more than your estimate, you may dispute the charge.
