Neck Masses

Our Head & Neck team specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of neck masses. Some of the neck masses we treat include enlarged lymph nodes, thyroglossal duct cysts, and branchial cleft cysts.

Enlarged Lymph Node

The lymph nodes are part of the lymphatic system and aide with overall immune system function. Lymph nodes are located in the neck, armpits, under the collar bones and in the groin, as well as along various other points in the body. They tend to swell and become uncomfortable when there is an active infection in the body.

Most people tend to notice lymph node swelling in the neck and armpits. Swelling of the lymph nodes that is not extremely painful or larger than two centimeters is not generally a cause for concern; however, if the swelling is worrisome or persistent, treatment should be sought. Symptoms usually include pain and/or swelling at and around the lymph node.

Thyroglossal Duct Cyst

The Thyroglossal Duct is located in the front of the neck just under the chin. Cysts are very uncommon and are more likely to occur in young males aged between 4 and 20. Symptoms of a thyroglossal duct cyst include difficulty breathing and/or swallowing, drainage, pain and sensitivity to touch, and swelling of the gland.

Branchial Cleft Cyst

Branchial Cleft Cysts are generally birth defects that can occur on one or both sides of the neck or immediately under the collar bones. They are typically found in babies and young children and occur when the neck and collar bones do not develop correctly while in the womb. Symptoms of a branchial cleft cyst include lumps or pits at the site, swelling, and drainage.
